The Spartanburg Flames annual summer soccer camp concluded last Friday with a record-breaking 150 participants ranging in age from 6 to 16 years old. The week-long camp, held at the Flames training facility, focused on skill development, tactical understanding, and most importantly, fostering a love for the beautiful game.

Head Coach Carlos Mendez, who organized the camp with assistance from his varsity players, was thrilled with the turnout and enthusiasm displayed by the young participants. “It’s incredible to see so many kids passionate about soccer,” Mendez said. “This camp isn’t just about developing technical skills – it’s about building character, teamwork, and confidence.”

The camp featured daily training sessions covering all aspects of the game, from basic ball control and passing techniques to advanced tactical concepts for older participants. Varsity players served as counselors and mentors, sharing their experience and providing individual instruction to campers.

Senior captain Sofia Martinez, who assisted with coaching the intermediate group, found the experience particularly rewarding. “Working with these young players reminds me why I fell in love with soccer in the first place,” Martinez explained. “Their energy and eagerness to learn is contagious.”

The camp concluded with a mini-tournament featuring teams composed of players from different age groups, emphasizing collaboration and sportsmanship. Parents and family members filled the sidelines to cheer on the young athletes, creating a festive atmosphere that embodied the Flames’ community spirit.

“Several of these campers will likely join our youth programs in the coming years,” noted Youth Development Coordinator Lisa Rodriguez. “This camp serves as an important pipeline for developing the next generation of Flames soccer players.”

Plans are already underway for next summer’s camp, with organizers hoping to accommodate even more young soccer enthusiasts from throughout the region.
